Extreme Cold & Concrete

Weather DamageI guess you could say it’s been colder than usual this year. Extended periods of below -20 can wreak havoc on your mental attitude never mind what big dips in temperature can do to you outside structures and concrete.

The freezing temperature of concrete is approximately 28ºF (-2º C).

Concrete does not maintain its strength when poured at low temperatures. Almost 50% of strength loss can occur if the concrete freezes within the first few hours after placement. Temperature affects the rate at which hydration of the cement occurs. Low concrete temperatures will stall the set and weaken the strength.

Hardscapes Inc. knows about concrete, we know how to keep your concrete from cracking and heaving and we know how to make it look beautiful at the same time.

Concrete Kitchen

Have you ever thought about turning your kitchen floor into concrete?

concretekitchenfloorThink about it. It’s the one place that you are constantly cleaning and wiping. You are always dropping sharp objects, leaving nicks and gouges and chipping in whatever flooring you have in place. It’s just constant maintenance.

Now concrete on the other hand can be made to look like any surface you want. With new advances in concrete finishes your floor can look exactly like any tile you ever wanted or even a wood finish.

The difference is, no maintenance. Concrete is virtually indestructible. The life span of your floor is huge and if you get tired of the look, a quick surface renewal and you can have a brand now look without the inconvenience of tearing up the old floor and laying down the new.

The Canada Sports Hall of Fame

I took my boys to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame at Canada Olympic Park this weekend.

It was great to see all of the amazing sports history as we get ready for the Olympics this week.

I was very happy to see how great our floor in the hockey exhibit looked after 2 and a half years open to the public. As you can see, The loonie is still stuck in the “ice”

We were honoured to have been chosen to provide the custom seamless floor for the hockey exhibit. Hardscapes Inc. specializes in one of a kind floors. With unlimited colours, patterns, and textures, we create truly custom floors to make your space unique.

Concrete Floors

This gorgeous floor was created by engraving the pattern with our Mongoose concrete engraver. Next, We stained the concrete with Elite Crete’s Antique Brown Chem stone stain. The lines were  highlighted with Antique black by one of our master installers with a steady hand to create the soft rustic edges to the pattern. The floor is coated with Elite Crete PT-1 Epoxy for beauty and durability.

This is a great way to change the look of your floors.

Concrete Discoloration

Even though concrete is a substance that can be easily mixed, you can really run into problems if it is not worked properly. These issues include scaling, discoloring and shrinkage to name a few.

Discoloration or discoloring is one of the most common.

If you are using the same materials, mix and batch your concrete should have a consistent color. Changes in concrete color can occur just by using two different cements or if a chemical from a job site gets added to the mix, even different water sources can change the color of the concrete.

Solving discoloration problems:

  1. Discuss your tolerances with the supplier
  2. Water must be completely evaporated before concrete can be finished
  3. Make sure the entire surface is uniformly cured
  4. Use a consistent form release agent

Hardscapes Inc. uses these methods and many more to create perfect concrete structure every time.

Ever Repaired Cracks in your Concrete Porch?

Cracked PorchAging concrete can go from bad to worse fairly quickly if not attended too.

These days’ most front porches are made with concrete and what starts out as a small crack can quickly become a larger crack if water gets in and freezes.

Depending on how deep the crack is it may have to be filled in with vinyl patching and then capped with a concrete patching material. You might even have to use a metal brush or some other method like stapling or chiseling away some of the edges to make a smoother repair.

The results can vary, from ok to ugly.

This is not really a DIY situation. Why not let an expert take the struggle out of this kind of home repair.

Hardscapes Inc. has all the tools and the know how to quickly assess any situation and find the immediate answer to your worn concrete issues.
