Canada Day celebrates the birthday of Canada. On July 1, 1867 Canada became a new federation with its own constitution by signing the Constitution Act – formerly known as the British North America Act.

This year we should take a moment to appreciate our country and the unity and strength we have shown during the COVID-19 pandemic. While there have been serious social and economic costs, our adherence to the restrictions put in place have made a difference. Let’s keep it going…

Looking for perfect concrete structure?

Even though concrete is a substance that can be easily mixed, you can really run into problems if it is not worked properly. These issues include scaling, discoloring and shrinkage to name a few. Discoloration or discolouring is one of the most common.

If you are using the same materials, mix and batch your concrete should have a consistent colour. Changes in concrete colour can occur just by using two different cements or if a chemical from a job site gets added to the mix. Even different water sources can change the colour of the concrete.

Solving discoloration problems:

  • Discuss your tolerances with the supplier
  • Water must be completely evaporated before concrete can be finished
  • Make sure the entire surface is uniformly cured
  • Use a consistent form release agent

This May long weekend will look a little different

With the Victoria Day Weekend approaching, there are still many public health restrictions in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and many businesses and services will be closed.

Unfortunately it won’t be May long weekend cottage life and camping as usual either as all National and Alberta parks are closed to visitors and Parks Canada is recommending to ‘stay home’. If you are planning on heading out, be sure to check your local area rules and regulations beforehand.

Even though our weekend dreams may be dashed, it’s important to remember that these circumstances aren’t forever. There will be many more long weekends ahead to enjoy when safe to do so, and with everyone working together to get through this, hopefully that time isn’t in the too distant future. Let’s do our part and make the best of our uncertain times.

Life will resume eventually but now that daily traffic is at a minimum this may just be the perfect time to give your floors a facelift and bring them back to life. Concrete flooring systems are a practical choice for just about any commercial or industrial flooring project as they create an environment that is safe, clean, easy to maintain.

A concrete overlay can make all the difference. This type of overlay can add years to the life of your floor and create a specific ambiance designed especially for your business.

Here are a few things to consider when contemplating a concrete overlay:

  • the conditions, wear and tear your floors be exposed to
  • certain polished surfaces might not be appropriate for wet conditions
  • high traffic areas may require a darker colour to give the floor a longer life and keep maintenance to a minimum
  • this type of surface when coated with a sealer, is stain-resistant to dirt and grease. All that’s required is routine cleaning and maintenance
  • installation costs average between $3 – $10/sq ft depending on installation specifics. Please note that more elaborate finishes can cost more.
